Young golfers hitting the links to fight cancer

A one-of-a-kind golf tournament, sponsored by kids for kids, has drawn the attention of PGA golfer Steve Flesch of Union, Ky.

Sabine's Cup Tournament is set for June 25 at Ivy Hills Country Club, Newtown.

Flesch will be handing out trophies. Elliot Rubenstein, 17, and Alex Boeding, 17, are co-chairs.

The goal is to make a difference while helping Cincinnati's CancerFree Kids, said Karen Rubenstein, coordinator.

The tournament is named for Sabine Friedrichsmeyer, who died at age 25 of leukemia. Friedrichsmeyer was a sports enthusiast and avid equestrian from childhood.

"She was my sister and we have wanted to do something to honor her memory," said Karen Rubenstein, the mother of Elliot. "We are trying to bring in kids from all over the city. So far, we have kids from private, parochial and public schools."

Boys and girls ages 13-18 who enter Sabine's Cup will raise funds by signing up hole sponsors. All proceeds will benefit CancerFree Kids.

Ivy Hills is reducing greens fees to encourage players to participate, and a limited number of "outing scholarships" will cover those fees for players who cannot afford them.

The cost is $45, which includes lunch.

FUNDRAISER HELPS EIGHTH-GRADER

After seven years battling a rare form of cancer, struggling with a wheelchair to get in and out of the house, Brandon Emerson, 14, now faces another battle. He goes to Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center June 7 for an operation to correct scoliosis, a curvature of the spine.

Family and friends are planning a breakfast and fundraiser for Brandon at John Wesley United Methodist Church, 1927 W. Kemper Road, Pleasant Run.

Brandon is suffering from Friedreich's ataxia, a rare form of cancer that attacks the nervous system. His mother, Judy Emerson, said the fundraiser is being held to get funds to build a wheelchair ramp.

"Right now it is difficult for him to get in and out of the house without someone helping him," said Judy Emerson of Colerain Township. "We are trying to make it handicap-accessible as much as possible, because we know after the surgery on June 7, he will probably never walk again."

Brandon is in eighth grade at Pleasant Ridge Middle School. He has two younger siblings, Bryan, 11, and Samantha, 7.

GOLF CLASSIC PLANNED JUNE 18

The Big Hose Golf Classic will be held June 18 at the Ivy Hills Country Club, Newtown, with proceeds going to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

The event is sponsored by Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky firefighters.

Registration begins at 10:30 a.m., lunch at 11 a.m., and a shotgun start at noon.

The four-man scramble tournament will cost $125 for an individual and $500 for a team.

It includes 18 holes of golf, gift bag, lunch, beverages on the course, and dinner.

Prizes will be available for first-, second- and third-place finishers.

It also will feature long-drive and closest-to-pin contests.

The awards party following the tournament will include dinner with silent auction and awards.
